A Plugin For All, And For All A Good Night

Monday, December 15th

Hey all, its Monday again, which means a long week of work. Some of you luckier ones may be on your holidays, whereas I am stuck in the office at work, with actually very little to do! With my bosses away I have had to take on dribs and drabs of work…which ultimately has led to me developing a little plugin for wordpress! For those of you who have read my blog before, its a little bit like the one I had discussed previously, but not as ‘fancy’. It’s taken me most of the day to write it (who knew how fiddly it all could get), but I offer it for you who wish to use it! It is still in the early stages, but preliminary tests show that it is working at its ‘basic’ level.

Stop Yammering On – What Is It?

Well, basically its a plugin which allows you to see all of the people who have commented on your blog so far, along with how many times the individual has posted and the different names (or ‘aliases’) they have used when commenting on your site. I developed it because I was finding it hard to keep track of who had posted a comment on my blog, and when I wanted to visit those sites to say thank-you (or just check on what others had written), I had to look around to find them. This plugin allows you to display them in a (somewhat) tidy fashion in your actual admin console.

Hang On, You Said Something About It Being Basic?!

Wow you really pay attention! Well the version I’m giving you guys is the basic version I have literally just finished - I haven’t started work on the more advanced version yet. However, the more advanced version will allow you to exclude the websites of people you may not want to visit anymore, along with being able to take a date range – so if someone hasn’t commentated on your blog within the last month, they won’t show up (if your that way inclined). There is also the possibility to extend this and have a list of just blogs you specify, along with grabbing their latest post – more towards the plugin idea I shared with you last time (although I found parsing the rss a wee bit difficult depending on what version of php your hosting provider has – something for me to look into).

Enough Talk – Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie!

So if you’d like to use the plugin, or just simply check it out, you can download it here:

For The Love Of Commentators

To access the page, simply upload the script to your plugins directory, activate the plugin, and then visit “Settings -> FTLO Commentators”.  I hope you get some use out of it – I know I will! If you can think of anything extra you would like to see in the plugin that I haven’t already mentioned, let me know and I’ll see what I can do! I’m off now to rush away from work as fast as my tired little legs will carry me!

EDIT: The prior issue has now been resolved, so download away!! (Have removed issue for formatting and ‘less rambling’ sake!)

Dan

Haha, can you not add in plugins on normal wordpress platforms? I’m sure it should be possible…

Underdogblogger spoke the following

nope……well not that I can find anyway – probably an “extra” that you can pay for, but that kind of defeats the point of my blog…..

Very cool idea, I look forward to seeing what features you pack into the “advanced version”.

Lol, I promise it won’t. If you do use it, I’d love some feedback to how it works, and what you’d like to see working better/features added.

I see the comment subscription tool was worth adding as well ;)

I haven’t installed it yet Dan, but I will be sure to give you and update when I do. Heck, I might even do a post about it.

Hey… looks like my previous comment must have gotten stuck in moderation for some reason, since it isn’t here. I wrote it a while back, but I’ll try to reconstruct it:

The plug-in is a cool idea. I like it. I’ve run into a couple problems, though.

The biggest is that the second highest commenter is displayed as follows:
# of posts – Dan (linked to the plugin’s options page – and a huge number of aliases, including lots of (non-approved) spammers and people who didn’t enter a website.

The other problem is that the Next link at the bottom gets me to a “not found” error page.

Other than those, though, it works as advertised, and I can see it’s useful.

Ah, well your comment DID go into moderation, but it was for the next post up, at http://www.raceforamillion.co.uk/for-the-love-of-commentators-my-plugin/

I hadn’t replied because of my idiocy and thinking I already had done, so my apologies. I have now written an ‘actual’ response :)
