Get Respect With Your Blog CommentSaturday, November 8th |
I want to actually talk about something I feel is quite important in your blog commenting practise, but isn’t really addressed. A lot of you will already know what I am going to talk about, possibly the majority, but I feel like I need to discuss it - for a good reason.
You see, when I started blog commenting, I always felt something was missing – I was leaving comments but people didn’t seem to be visiting my blog, and I wasn’t getting replies from the actual bloggers themselves. I wasn’t sure what I was doing wrong. Then one day it hit me like a ton a bricks – I was looking through the comments of a popular blogger, visiting the various blog comment links to check out some new blogs, and I skipped one. I realised what I did, and went back to see why I skipped it – turns out that user didnt have a personal avatar in the comment. I went and checked all the others – all these people had pictures of themselves, of their mascots, or logos next to their blog comments. Yet this user and myself didn’t…and I didn’t even know how to fix it!
Luckily I managed to find that by visiting Gravatar I was able to set myself up with an avatar and now when I post a little cheeky picture of myself shows up next to the comment I have just made. However, why should you get an avatar for posting? Well, I’v found that since getting myself an avatar, I have had an increase in the number of visitors to my blog – sadly I can’t say this is a thorough test, as I have also increased my blog commenting circle – but I genuinely believe that by having an avatar, you are making yourself a more appealing blog to visit. I feel that it instills a sense of trust in your blog, and yourself as a blogger. If you don’t have a ‘gravatar’ yet, I can’t recommend it enough! Go get one now!

I would like to add that witty or goofy comments will often get you a click as well. Unfortunately, this one is neither.

lol, well thanks for the advice, and thanks for commenting

A gravatar is the way to go and will probably at least double the traffic you get from comments. I wrote about it a while ago and really, it is essential I think if you’re serious about driving traffic through comments.

Yeah thats what Iv noticed since posting with an actual picture of myself, more people seem to be following the links through and visiting – which is great! Didn’t realise you had written about it Ben, I might go back and check that post out!

I love the use of gravatars. It makes commenting so much more personal, even if it is a logo that is displayed. Having a visual to place a persons name with goes a long way in developing a relationship with that person.
But I also think being consistent is key in commenting. If you come to my site once and leave a comment I will probably come and visit you, but at the same time I might forget. So if you come back and comment again you are surely going to get me over to your site eventually from which your content will hopefully make me a follower.
Good work by the way as I just signed up as a subscriber to your site.

Hey, thanks Adam
Most blogs I find when ’surfing’ I end up commenting and then adding them to my subscription list – just can’t help it! I think everyone who has commented on the site I’m on their mailing list…if not its only because they didn’t have one! lol

In such an impersonal world of blogging, your avatar makes it a little more personal and a cheeky one certainly goes a long way.. Don’t hide behind the veil of internet if you can. A gravatar helps to build credibility and trust in you.

Hi Dan. I’ve always had an avatar, even before I started blogging, and so I wouldn’t have been able to substantiate your argument. Even so, now that I’ve read this post, I am so glad that I do have one.

Well it seems that I already had a gravatar account when I went to get one, just no avatar – so I was gutted, lol! Thanks for commenting

It’s the least I could do, especially since you made the effort to comment on my blog and being part of the F Group I always reciprocate.

Nothing worse than a blog with no comments. It’s almost as if you’re talking to yourself. having said that, I remember there was some Aussie sheila that I did a post on who had a very popular blog, even though she didn’t have the comments turned on, ergo no comments?

Hmm… I’ve been resistant to getting a Gravatar. I’m not sure why exactly. Maybe I’ll have to look into it. You really think having an avatar increases traffic?

I think it makes you a bit more trustworthy, especially if its a picture of yourself. It gives you a bit of ‘uniqueness’ as well, because if you don’t have one you merge in with all the others that dont, but by having one it makes you stand out as it were!

funny, never really thought about it, and never really thought about setting up the gravator just for the sake of getting comments, i just hadn´t made that click yet.
more than the power of gravators, i think it lies in the comments themselves, if they make sense and are thought provoking I´d sooner check out that blogger´s site. Also I find myself checking out the commentluv links, especially if the title catches my attention.
You certainly gave something to think about

The comments themselves are important yes, but for people who might ’skim’ the comments, its good to have a picture rather than a standard ‘no picture’ gravatar as theres a chance they may stop and read what you are saying

There is something about having an avatar that makes people feel like a real person is writing what they believe. There is someone to stand behind that comment, vs. the anonymous little grey guy.

I think your absolutely right there Kristi – hence why I stepped up and used a picture of myself, as opposed to the grey anonymous guy!
